I finally got some decent pics today of how Chinese people cross the street . . . it’s essentially like playing Frogger (you know, the ancient video game we all used to play back in the day).
There are 3 lanes of oncoming traffic on the side of the road you see in this picture. There are NO traffic lights at this crosswalk, and the cars do NOT stop for pedestrians. They do slow down a little, and honk, and swerve to miss the people crossing . . . so far I haven’t seen anyone get hit so the ‘system’ must work fairly well.
That being said, crossing the street in China is quite an ordeal for expats, especially newbies like Julianne and I. The basic strategy we use is to go when the Chinese people go, and follow their lead.
Anyways, I’d have to say crossing the street has been one of the culture shock experiences I’ve had during the first eight weeks we’ve been in China.
